A Healthier You... (Part 3)

6. Phone A Friend

It’s easy to take your mates for granted and prioritise your job or family instead. But friends can be lifesavers – literally – as they can help to reduce stress and give you the feeling of connectedness you need, according to Vera Peiffer, author of Inner Happiness. Take five minutes to call someone close. ‘Speaking to a good friend,’ she says, ‘will help you to achieve clarity of mind in stressful situations.’

7. An Apple A Day

It’s an old adage, but apples keep on coming out tops as health boosters. The latest studies from the US show this humble fruit is really a superfood . Research at Cornell University, New York, demonstrated apples’ anti-cancer activity (apple skin was particularly effective – so no peeling, then). And a Californian study showed that apples, especially their juice, have a heart-protective effect.

8. Chill Out

Is work getting on top of you? Is stress your second name? Stay sane by making a resolution to do a five-minute chill-out once a day to give your brain a break. ‘Relaxation is vital if you lead a frenetic life,’ says Professor Cary Cooper, professor of psychology and health at UMIST. ‘It doesn’t have to be complicated. Simply find a room where you can be alone, turn off computers and phones, sit back in your chair or lie on the floor, close your eyes, breathe slowly and imagine yourself lying on the beach with warmth seeping through your body.’
